For me, poetry isn’t simply expression, but rather the method in which to collect myself and piece me back together; my poetry is an amalgamation of who I’ve been, who I am and who I might become.

Joyful Positives: A Writing Challenge

June 18th, 2020

Last year, in the summer, I had identified some things that I wanted to work on in terms of my writing and created a challenge for myself to try and solve it. In particular, I had found myself to be overly critical of my own work and was realizing that in fear of what people would think I would often shelf pieces, even if I  enjoyed them.  So, I challenged myself to write something every day within 45 minutes and post it, regardless of grammar, syntax, etc.

This summer I would like to challenge myself again, but for a different purpose. For essentially all of 2020, it has been one awful thing after another.  Every news channel, social media platform, conversation with friends or family, all seem to be about all the horrible things happening in the world.  While it is extremely important that we learn about what’s going on in the world, keep ourselves updated and do our part in bettering many of these issues, it’s also important to make sure that it doesn’t take a toll on us. I’m a strong believer in the concept that you can’t give to others if your own tank is empty. Meaning that if you no longer have hope in the potential of change, it’s really difficult to work towards it. So this challenge is my attempt to keep a positive outlook and mindset when everything else seems to be falling apart,  and hopefully encourage others to do the same.

When I first started this blog it was called the roses in the ashes, because I wanted to look for the good in bad situations. So, I hope that through this next month or so I can refill my own tank and hopefully help fill yours too, or at the very least encourage you to do the same!

The rules/guidelines for this will be as follows:

  1. I will post every other day.
  2. The post will be about something positive, something I’m grateful for, or maybe even just something that makes me happy.
  3. My goal is to look for the little joyful positives,  be encouraging, and bring a little more light when everything else seems so dark.

All that being said, there are definitely many important things happening in the world that need our attention and support, and I do encourage you to educate yourself, find out how you can help, and do whatever you can. However, if it all ever feels like too much and you need a bit of positivity,  feel free to keep up with this challenge and my journey in remaining positive.
