Prisha Khimavat

living life one word at a time.

For me, poetry isn’t simply expression, but rather the method in which to collect myself and piece me back together; my poetry is an amalgamation of who I’ve been, who I am and who I might become.

If Only

If only you’d been born a son,

Your father’s life would have been much easier.

If only you’d given me a proper education

My life would have been so much easier

If only you didn’t deem me less than my brothers

My self worth would have been much higher

If only you believed in all that I could achieve

I would’ve been so much happier

If only you allowed me to achieve my potential

The world would progress much faster.

If only you didn’t underestimate half the world’s population

We would all be much better for it.

If only you didn’t

Think my education was worthless

Deem me unworthy of investment

If only you didn’t

Push me down to raise the men around me

If only you’d let me grow into an intelligent, educated woman

If only you’d deemed me human and not a burden.

If only

If only you were capable of empathy

If only we deserved the claim of equality.

If only.

We don’t ask for much,

Just a basic plea of humanity.

Don’t let another little girl have a reason to say

“If Only.
